Data Garden

TCS, a new building on Carnegie Mellon University’s campus, is covered in mites.sensors that collect 9 different types of data. Yet, most people do not realize that their data is being collected as they interact within this space.

Data Garden explores making people aware of this data collection and using it to foster a relationship between people and space that invokes curiosity. As someone sits down in TCS to work, the data plant cracks open. Slowly it blooms over time as the user continues to sit, before prompting the user to pick up the front petal and inviting them to explore TCS and discover where the mites.sensors live in the space and and learn about the different data types collected through an AR experience.

Discovery

The user sits down. Data Garden immediately recognizes the user’s presence through data collection, leading to a subtle bloom over time.

User Interaction

After some time, Data Garden prompts user to pick up the front petal to then engage in an AR experience.

AR Feedback

The AR experience visualizes the data being collected by the sensors. This helps grow a relationship between the user, the space, and the data being collected. The front petal will reveal to the user where the sensors are in the building, as well as clearly showing how the data is feeding the plant to bloom in your presence.
